Taco Seasoning (Nightshade-free & AIP)

Taco Seasoning (Nightshade-free, AIP)

Taco seasoning is one of the first things I missed when I started the AIP. Unlike a "Paleo" diet, the Autoimmune Protocol removes nightshade vegetables and spices to aid in gut-healing. No peppers? No spicy food? These had been staples in our house. Tacos, taco bowls, and taco salad were go-to foods we ate at least once a week! I was delighted to find that I could replace my old taco seasoning (full of nightshade spices) with this zippy blend!

Below are two recipe variations for you. A strict AIP compliant blend plus the option of some seed-based spice additions if you have reintroduced seeds. If you haven't, don't worry, you will love the original strict AIP version! I also include add-ins for individual batches of taco meat.

Taco Seasoning (Nightshade-free, AIP)

Taco Seasoning (Nightshade-free & AIP)

Yeild: 4-6 uses

Seasoning Mix Ingredients:
  • 2 Tbsp onion powder
  • 2 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 Tbsp dried oregano
  • 2.5 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
**AIP Reintroduction Ingredients (seed based spices):
  • 3 Tbsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp black pepper

Additional Ingredients for Taco Filling (per 1 lb of meat):
  • juice of 1/2 lime
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro

Method:
  • Put all seasoning mix ingredients in a small glass jar. Put the lid on and shake until well combined.
  • Use 1.5 to 2 Tablespoons per pound of meat (ground beef, pork, chicken, etc.), or to taste. Brown meat in a large skillet. Stir the seasoning into the browned meat with about a 1/4 cup of water, simmer until dry.
  • Add the additional lime juice & chopped cilantro if desired. Serve as filling for tacos or taco salad.

TIP: Try serving taco seasoned meat in my Cassava Root Tortillas!
