Sweet & Sour Sauce (AIP, Paleo Autoimmune Protocol)

Sweet and sour sauce. Doesn't that bring back memories of tasty, greasy fast food? I used to eat that. While my body is very happy I don't anymore, I did miss the sauce! So, I came up with an amazing pineapple based sweet & sour sauce to use on whatever I want. Or on it's own right off the spoon...don't judge, you'll want to, too! Try this sauce along side my AIP Chicken Strips or check out my yummy Sweet & Sour Meatball recipe that uses this sauce!

Happy dipping!

Sweet & Sour Sauce (AIP, Paleo Autoimmune Protocol)

Sweet & Sour Sauce

Yield: 1 1/4 cups

Time: 10 min.

Equipment: Blender or Food Processor
Ingredients
  • 2 cups fresh pineapple, cubed (to make 1 cup purée)
  • 1/4 cup bone broth, cool (water can be substituted in a pinch)
  • 1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. raw honey
  • 1 Tbsp. + 1 tsp. balsamic vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. fresh, grated ginger
  • 1 1/2 tsp. arrowroot powder
  • 1/2 tsp. pink salt (or sea salt)
  • 1/8 tsp. ground turmeric
  • sprinkle of salt

Method
  • Purée the pineapple cubes in blender or food processor. Empty out into a large saucepan.
  • Add honey, balsamic vinegar, ginger, salt, & turmeric. Whisk together & turn stove to medium heat.
  • In a small bowl or cup, stir together the bone broth & arrowroot powder until smooth. Add to the saucepan. Whisk constantly, let it come to a simmer and continue cooking 1-2 minutes until sauce has thickened.
  • Serve hot or cold.

Hello Bethany! I haven't found arrowroot powder ... is there any substitute for that?

Tapioca starch can be used to substitute!

This was really good with your chicken strips! My food processor didn't cut up the plantains as fine but it was still really good. And I my husband even liked them! Still working on the kids...hahaha. Definitely keeping this one in my "go-to" recipes! Thank you! Do you have a "print" button that I'm not seeing? I'm in the beginning stages of my AIP diet and have been printing off the recipes I really like.
